What Is Mediator Release Testing (MRT)? A Personalized Approach to Identifying Food Triggers
Have you ever wondered why you still experience bloating, headaches, fatigue, or other chronic symptoms—even though you eat well, exercise regularly, and prioritize your health?
For many people, the answer isn't always obvious.
While food allergies are well recognized, there is another category of food-related reactions that can be much more difficult to identify. These reactions may not occur immediately after eating and can contribute to ongoing inflammation and persistent symptoms.
One tool I use in my practice to help uncover these potential food triggers is Mediator Release Testing (MRT).
What Is MRT?
Mediator Release Testing (MRT) is a specialized blood test that measures your body's inflammatory response to more than 170 foods and food chemicals.
Unlike traditional food allergy testing, MRT does not measure IgE antibodies. Instead, it evaluates the release of inflammatory mediators from immune cells after they are exposed to different foods and food chemicals.
Inflammatory mediators include substances such as histamine, cytokines, prostaglandins, and other immune signaling compounds that may contribute to inflammation and symptoms in some individuals.
Rather than asking, "Are you allergic?" MRT helps answer a different question:
"Which foods are least likely to trigger inflammation in your body?"
The goal is not to diagnose a medical condition, but to provide personalized information that can help guide nutrition therapy.
Why Do Food Reactions Feel So Difficult to Identify?
Many people try food journaling or elimination diets, yet still struggle to identify what's causing their symptoms.
One reason is that food-related inflammatory responses can sometimes be delayed. Symptoms may appear several hours—or even longer—after eating, making it difficult to connect a specific food with how you feel.
This often leads to:
Endless elimination diets
Trial-and-error nutrition
Conflicting information online
Unnecessary food restrictions
Frustration and confusion
MRT provides objective laboratory data that can help reduce the guesswork and create a more personalized nutrition strategy.
Who Might Benefit from MRT?
MRT may be considered for individuals experiencing chronic symptoms that have not responded to traditional nutrition approaches.
Some examples include:
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Chronic bloating or digestive discomfort
Migraines or frequent headaches
Brain fog
Persistent fatigue
Joint or muscle pain
Eczema or chronic skin conditions
Certain autoimmune conditions
Individuals who have tried multiple elimination diets without lasting success
Not everyone needs MRT. During your initial consultation, we'll determine together whether testing is appropriate based on your symptoms, health history, and goals.
Understanding Your MRT Results
Your MRT report categorizes foods according to your body's inflammatory response.
🟢 Green — Low Reactivity
These foods become the foundation of your personalized nutrition plan because they are least likely to trigger inflammatory mediator release.
🟡 Yellow — Moderate Reactivity
These foods may be temporarily limited while your body has an opportunity to calm inflammation.
🔴 Red — High Reactivity
These foods or food chemicals demonstrate the strongest inflammatory response and are typically avoided during the initial phase of the program.
One of the most important things I tell every client is this:
There are no "good" foods or "bad" foods—only foods that your body may respond to differently.
The goal is never permanent restriction.
The goal is understanding your body.
What Happens After the Test?
Receiving your MRT report is only the beginning.
Once your results are available, we'll meet for a comprehensive review where we'll discuss:
What your report means
Your most reactive and least reactive foods
How your results relate to your symptoms
Where to begin nutritionally
Questions you may have about implementation
From there, we'll create a personalized strategy designed specifically for you.
What Is the LEAP Protocol?
The LEAP (Lifestyle Eating and Performance) Protocol is a personalized anti-inflammatory nutrition program that uses your MRT results to guide dietary recommendations.
Rather than simply eliminating foods, LEAP focuses on building a balanced nutrition plan using foods that are least likely to trigger inflammation while gradually expanding dietary variety over time.
Together, we'll work to:
Calm inflammation
Reduce food-related symptom flare-ups
Support digestive and immune health
Improve confidence around food
Expand food variety as your body progresses
The long-term goal is always a sustainable, nourishing way of eating—not unnecessary restriction.
Why Work with a Registered Dietitian & Certified LEAP Therapist?
An MRT report is only as valuable as the guidance that follows it.
